Some Kind of Nightmare on Friday the 13th

Tonight was another gathering of good friends for music, though this time it was some we don’t see as often. Some Kind of Nightmare has been awesome enough to be coming to Phoenix to play shows and make a lot of great friends in the process. During this time Molly faced one of the biggest challenges of her life, breast cancer.  Not only did she beat it, her and her husband plus bandmate, Chy, kept doing what they love playing and writing music. They are two of the strongest people…

Not So Aggro

The Aggrolites have a sound that took a little more for me to warm up to a few years ago. They are a ska band with the more traditional, older rocksteady sound. For whatever reason, I initially did not get into them. The first time I took a hard look at their music was when I saw Jesse Wagner play with Vic, from an all-time favorite ska band the Slackers, at a Punk Rock Bowling pool party. The duo was amazing and left me questioning why I hadn’t listened to…

Favorite Albums of 2016 From the National Bands

Deciding on a name for this, and how to sort the bands that aren’t from Phoenix, but don’t tour a ton outside of their home towns and states was a little difficult. In the end, I wanted to put an emphasis on the guys from Phoenix so this category covers everyone else. These are bands I will continue to say check them out if you can in 2017 in whatever location you can find them! It got a little tougher to sort through this one. Down to the well-known fact…

Favorite Local Albums of 2016

People like lists I hear, so I’m putting together two. The first of which is to spotlight some of my favorite music released in the past year in Phoenix that I managed to catch. I struggled to keep it a best of ten, so I made it fifteen. I’m sure it may come to a shock for some it isn’t a punk band atop it, but my favorite genre does sit within in a couple spots. Be sure to check out all these artists and catch them at a show…

Creepy Birthday To You

Stealing a little lyric from the “Theme from a NOFX Album” and slightly modifying it, Creepy Don is not really so creepy. This was the night to celebrate his birthday though in the most appropriate way, a punk show. The line-up included his band, We Might Be Wasted, amongst a great packet of musicians. Although, Nick, from Jack the Cat, jested that his taste in music hasn’t got better with age if Jack the Cat is playing. On that note, Jack the Cat kicked off the show. I don’t know…

Rocking Around The Upright Bass

A great philosophy in concert going is to always be at shows early and support all the bands. However, tonight was an example of the struggle of managing my time between my day job and keeping up with my website. My aim is to keep a twenty four hour cycle of show posts unless I’m writing up something bigger like the Punk Rock Eve or the upcoming Viva PHX, where there is more to go through. Unfortunately, doing that means I made sure after my day job to get Thursday…

They Are Not Protesters of Piñata

Punk rock is a mentality that can be infused into anything. The guys in Piñata Protest are a group that demonstrates this.  This band is a high energy infusion of Latin influences, like cumbia, into punk rock. Hopefully if there are people unaware of how awesome they are or that they are punk, this piece of writing about the show at Yucca will bring some people to go check them out next time they are in town. The show itself was an assortment of punk, kicking off with Andy Warpig’s…

Ringing In A New Year

For many, the year 2016 was not the best one that could have been. Many less likely and less positive events occurred over the past year that some are wishing to put behind them in a traditional way as the clock ticks past midnight. For me, the year has been about change. It has been changes for the positive in many topics. It has been a stepping block to further ambitions and passions. For people in either the positive or negative view of 2016, New Year’s Eve brought some of…

They Put the Dent in Twin Ponies

New Year’s Eve isn’t the only night that brings out a bunch of great music. The Eve of New Year’s Eve brings out just as much fun. I went over to Yucca for the awesome dudes in Dent and Twin Ponies releasing their new split. They know how to book a show, because Bear Ghost and Sonoran Chorus brought the energy too. Sonoran Chorus right off the bat hits you with this punk energy and alternative indie sound blend. This is the perfect show opener if you’re looking to make…

Tiny Space, Large Amount of Folk

There is a lot of great music that I get out to. One that hasn’t seen anytime on this site since it launched a few weeks ago would be the Folk Punks. The Pueblo, one of the smaller local venues here, played host to this genre’s energetic group of music fans and musicians. I don’t know how much holiday was in this “holidaze” show, but there was great music. First up is one of my favorite young punk musicians, Diego Galvan. He got the crowd moving right away. With the…
