A Zona Night with AJJ and Veronica Everheart

They say the universe works in mysterious ways. If you’ve been following me, I’m on a now five-month journey of experiencing long Covid and chronic fatigue. So, about a month ago I received an email about doing possible photos for this show and responded if I felt better, I might be able to at this Zona Nights show. Zona Nights the name for club shows playing around the inaugural Zona Music Fest. I am not exactly feeling better, but last week I received an email saying I’m approved. I thought…

A Loaded Night With Frank Turner

I have said it before, but sometimes there are strokes of luck when a few artists come together for a tour. You may call it a super tour by the number of killer acts in one place for one ticket that isn’t a festival. I bring that up because that is just what Frank Turner put together for his epic fifty states in fifty days tour. That is not touching on the big endeavor Frank took on to hit all fifty states in his first post 2020 U.S. tour. The…

The Littlest Man Band Pays A Visit to the Desert

The most regular stream I tuned in to through the Covid quarantine was that of Scott Klopfenstein. Not only did I hear, and subtly remember lyrics, of his solo work in regularity, but I heard the songs of this band called the Littlest Man Band. It is a band that formed back in 2003 but went on break while Scott moved to the East Coast. However, since Scott has come back to the West Coast, you can say the cliché he got the band back together. With a couple adjustments…

Teenage Halloween Comes to Arizona

While we have mourned a few of our favorite venues close over the past couple years, the good news is we are seeing birth of new venues too. It is wonderful when that new space is one about giving all ages, any musical creation a place to play. The new space I refer to is the Groundworks in Tucson that opened this past November. They had Sean and Ben, of AJJ, headline the big inaugural show. Since then, they have regularly been hosting shows and art down there. While it…

Rhythm Room Rocks With Dave Hause and the Mermaid

There are artists that transcend genre. They start in one we love the most or hold dear enough. Though as they grow as musicians they branch further into others. One of those musicians is Dave Hause, who I know from punk rock origins with The Loved Ones and later The Falcon and All Brights. With his solo work, he has branched out further to showcase folk rock skills. This night brought him back to Phoenix with those skills. His band Dave Hause and the Mermaid with the talented Will Hoge…

M3F 2022: Day One

The now by the name M3F festival has been running since 2004. The three in the name originally coming from McDowell Mountain Music when it started in Scottsdale in view of the McDowell Mountain range. Since then, it has only grown and grown, moving into bigger digs in downtown Phoenix at Margaret T Hance Park. It only made sense for them to remove the direct name of McDowell Mountain and rename to the acronym of M3F. My first attending of the festival was in 2016 where I watched Beck for…

Jeff Rosenstock And Friends At The Crescent Ballroom

There are artists that just invoke positivity. Not only in their performance, but in their day to day interactions and fans they inspire. You find the crowds in front of them are as supporting and happy as the artist they came to watch. Jeff Rosenstock is that kind of musician, regardless of the negative reflection of the world, albeit true, in his lyrics themselves. So throw in vaccination only requirements, to make people feel safe coming out, and the band themselves bringing Slaughter Beach, Dog and Oceanator with them to…

A Neighborhood Gathers for WayneFest 2021

Wayne Newton lived in Phoenix. Yes, Mr. Las Vegas and known for his iconic look performing music Wayne Newton. For a part of his childhood he grew up in the Coronado District of Phoenix. He attended North High School before moving again to set him up for all the grandeur of Las Vegas. Why bring this up? That is because WayneFest is a celebration named after him and a get together of the neighborhood he once lived in. It started in 2018 making it one of our newest festivals in…

A Scott and Lo(u)ser In A Living Room

Occasionally really cool opportunities come to a town near you. Having the opportunity to see Scott Klopfenstein, a longtime member of Reel Big Fish and his own project that followed with the Littlest Man Band, just play a living room one Saturday evening is one of those very special opportunities. While I was at Punk Rock Bowling I saw Scott and Chris Graue announce on Twitter they’d be playing a backyard in Phoenix. I was excited just with a little matter of sorting out attending the day they came to…

Flogging Molly Returns With Violent Femmes To Mesa!

Sometimes you know you miss things, but until they are before your eyes you don’t realize how much you missed them. When it came to the tour with Violent Femmes and Flogging Molly, a pair of them in the form of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Flogging Molly brought out that exact feeling for me. However, that was in part because I had never seen Thick or Violent Femmes before.  I was in for a treat with the four combined this Friday night. Our openers were a band…
