Different City, Same Skatercon

They say a change of scenery can do you well. For Skatercon 6, that meant heading to an entirely different city for the first time in Tucson. The five past prior ones have all been held in Phoenix. This time, we were about an hour and a half south with Mt. Lemmon in our backdrop at Santa Rita Skatepark. Skatercon in a different city did what it does best loaded with bands and skaters, local and touring. A little bit of technical issues playing into it made our Phoenix local…

Photo Gallery: The Adicts at the Marquee

There are bands that just make the entire set a magical experience. For me, one of the best bands at this is the Adicts. Monkey’s flair and way for the theatrics with various props bring this. Add in the happy faces of Pete Dee to Kiki Kabel while performing to add to the joyous feeling brought out in any given set. For me, it was a top of the bucket list to get the chance to take pictures of one of my favorites in punk rock, The Adicts. Though speaking…

The 2017 Top 10 of the Arizona Locals

I’ll say it here, for all the complaints people have for 2017, and I have a couple of my own, the Arizona music scene is strong. They are killing it in this last year. It made my choices tough. Fighting the urge to make it the longest list since 2016, I have cut it down to my top 10 local Phoenix and Arizona band albums. You can see my genre of preference in it, but I’m sure you will find surprises. So without further adieu… Alex Squared “Mexican Fishing Tricks”…

Good Vibes and Good Causes

After a full day of Warped Tour, would you go on to do two days of two shows? Some people may say no. For me, the answer is a yes. This may be how I earned the nickname that spawned this site. Although with it being a Saturday, I got a full night’s rest. I would start over at the Marquee Theatre and end my music adventure between three spaces in the Yucca Tap Room center. Up first was the big reason I was at the Marquee, to watch the…

Blackout

Weather can have an effect on shows. You know it because those outdoor shows have “RAIN OR SHINE” printed on them, but for lightning they will stop. If you told me tonight that the show at the Nile would have a delay because of a blackout for a couple blocks, I wouldn’t have believed you. However, that was just what happened as we lost power during a rain storm. The good news was that after an hour, the power came back and the bands played on until the end. The…

Double Whammy

What do you do when there is a bunch of music in one night? If you’re me, you try to find the best way to hit as much as you love and enjoy it. For tonight, probably one of the best examples of how I earned my nickname, I hit up two separate shows almost simultaneously. In this case, it was an easier example with both 51 West and Yucca Tap Room being walking distance. It was catching a great combination of some awesome folk punk, punk, and rockabilly combined.…

Some Kind of Nightmare on Friday the 13th

Tonight was another gathering of good friends for music, though this time it was some we don’t see as often. Some Kind of Nightmare has been awesome enough to be coming to Phoenix to play shows and make a lot of great friends in the process. During this time Molly faced one of the biggest challenges of her life, breast cancer.  Not only did she beat it, her and her husband plus bandmate, Chy, kept doing what they love playing and writing music. They are two of the strongest people…

Fea and some American Killers in the Night

Still working on the format here on the second post to the site, and doing it listening to the Fea self-titled album. Last night’s show was a blast, a mix of punk rocks plus one that I’m happy they got a chance to pick up the show. Right off the bat, this show started off with harder bands, the first being Deathride. These guys had their lead singer donning a Batman cape too. I loved watching their guitarist the most. Deathride’s lead singer alternated between the regular punk sound and…
