Different City, Same Skatercon

They say a change of scenery can do you well. For Skatercon 6, that meant heading to an entirely different city for the first time in Tucson. The five past prior ones have all been held in Phoenix. This time, we were about an hour and a half south with Mt. Lemmon in our backdrop at Santa Rita Skatepark. Skatercon in a different city did what it does best loaded with bands and skaters, local and touring. A little bit of technical issues playing into it made our Phoenix local…

M3F 2022: Day Two

With the first day of M3F under my belt, I was more excited going into the second day. I had already discovered so many new to me musicians and bands that it created a bigger anticipation for the second day. The sun was out this time that added warmth and to that feeling that it was going to be a good day.  As for the festival, it did live up to that growing anticipation and the bar set by the day prior. First of the music would be another solid…

A Swagger Their Own

There are bands that you think the world of when you hear them. You want to catch them live anytime you can. Then, something happens and they disappear. Sometimes that is it, but in others they continue on. The latter is the case with Harper and the Moths, who since their last album release have had a little turnover in their ranks. The changes and break only further makes it wonderful they are back, with new music and bolstered by a strong set of bands on their album release night.…

All In a Afternoon

The old Mason Jar used to do regular afternoon shows for years before it closed. In a nod to the old tradition, the Rebel Lounge that reopened the space as a venue has started it again. This past weekend I took up the opportunity finally check it out. It was a mix of anticipation to see Audrey Heartburn again while watching musicians I haven’t seen perform before with Connor Carmody, Ambient Six, and Corey PA. Opening up was a gentleman I had met before, Corey PA, but I had not…

80/20 Vision

You never know how long an endeavor is going to last. If it is something you are passionate about, you hope the rest of your life. It is why you celebrate each moment as the things that matter to you hit significant benchmarks. For 80/20 Records’ founder, Michael Zimmerlich, this year marks ten years of just that. It is ten years of him helping musicians get their music out there. I met him through one of my favorite locals that his label plays host to, Captain Squeegee. Then I kept…

Therapy For the Speed Bumps

Life likes to challenge your ability to do what you love. The ones you stick with through the hard parts are the things you tend to care for the most. I suppose that is part of the challenge. Life wants to tell you that the only way to survive is paying the bills and doing the job to that end. I ask where the fun in that is. What fun would life be if you were to be part of the status quo? If you only have one life to…

Guitar Party Power, Confirmed!

Bob Log III is a musician I have somehow missed seeing. He comes from Tucson, so he is nearby and plays Phoenix often enough to catch. He was on a club show that I attended on the inside stage of the Bunkhouse, during Punk Rock Bowling. I somehow missed him then too. Not sure how I have avoided his performances, but tonight was the night to correct that wrong. The night opened with only a single opener, but with the awesome named, Shit Show Duo. This pair of hilarious guys…

A Hodgepodge Reward of Music

Locally you tend to see some band mixing on the stages when they share shows. However, it usually is to tracks those bands already perform.  What if you took twenty five members of twenty five local bands, put them into a lottery to make five bands, and had them write and perform three songs plus a cover? You get what Steve, of Psyko Steve Presents, has put together in its fourth year, the Phoenix Rock Lottery. This awesome blend of local talent, music, and genre comes together for a fun…
