The 2017 Top 10 of the Arizona Locals

I’ll say it here, for all the complaints people have for 2017, and I have a couple of my own, the Arizona music scene is strong. They are killing it in this last year. It made my choices tough. Fighting the urge to make it the longest list since 2016, I have cut it down to my top 10 local Phoenix and Arizona band albums. You can see my genre of preference in it, but I’m sure you will find surprises. So without further adieu… Alex Squared “Mexican Fishing Tricks”…

Warped Tour: Part One

The amount of times I have gone to Warped Tour over the years is in the double digits. I have never gone for a full day in all these years until today. The triple digits routinely found here are the biggest reasons. However, armed with a photo pass for the first time and a ton of bands I didn’t want to miss, I made sure I was there at open. The only casualty was not glancing at the schedule to find our local girls in Doll Skin were a 1PM…

The Last Day Of Punk Rock Bowling 2017

The last day of Punk Rock Bowling turned into the one I knew most the prior three years. It would start with security check before entering the main stage. I was told my camera wouldn’t be allowed in. They didn’t stop me the prior two days, but it was deemed my camera was too professional with the security for today. I took it as this was the universe telling me to go enjoy Punk Rock Bowling the way it should be. By that, I mean that I drank for about…

Shut Up, Get Rad

Teenage Bottlerocket I discovered later than many. Regardless, when I did, I fell in love with the music. I picked up the latest at the time, “Freak Out!” and then consumed all of the music I could find going into their back catalog. They played music that gave me an old school Ramones feeling, but with modern punk blended in. The lyrics touched upon topics of love, skaters, geeky stuff, and shitty customer service jobs that I related to in a heartbeat. Enjoying everything I was listening to, of course,…

Theatrics and Fun Times Ahead

I’m of two minds of set times being posted. First, and probably more unique to myself and a few others, having set times posted can help me figure out on busy nights like tonight a plan of attack to hit the music I want to see. However, I’m on the other mind where I’ve been at a show early with an amazing local band, and no one is there. This happens more often than I like to see, and if there is only a start time you get a couple…

A Hodgepodge Reward of Music

Locally you tend to see some band mixing on the stages when they share shows. However, it usually is to tracks those bands already perform.  What if you took twenty five members of twenty five local bands, put them into a lottery to make five bands, and had them write and perform three songs plus a cover? You get what Steve, of Psyko Steve Presents, has put together in its fourth year, the Phoenix Rock Lottery. This awesome blend of local talent, music, and genre comes together for a fun…

Ringing In A New Year

For many, the year 2016 was not the best one that could have been. Many less likely and less positive events occurred over the past year that some are wishing to put behind them in a traditional way as the clock ticks past midnight. For me, the year has been about change. It has been changes for the positive in many topics. It has been a stepping block to further ambitions and passions. For people in either the positive or negative view of 2016, New Year’s Eve brought some of…

‘Tis the Season For Jared and the Mill

I don’t know how I’ve managed to do it being a Phoenix resident my entire life, but the second annual holiday show for Jared and the Mill is the first time I’ve seen the band. I’ve seen Jared play in things like the Phoenix Rock Lottery, and I’ve had a couple people give high recommendation to see the band. All I can say is that somehow things overlapped, but the drought is all over now. The Holiday Show was an awesome line up from top to bottom, with Sundressed kicking…
