Noogy Under The Moonlight

D.I.Y., “Do It Yourself”, venues bring out a few of the most creative spots I’ve watched music and a conducive environment for it. Over the years there have been a few that pop up and disappear around Phoenix. More recently we’ve had the Rats Ass and Krusty Palmz. Now the Krusty Palmz legacy moves into Ground Zero, run by the same people. This was the setting for Noogy’s latest visit to the desert with the local Standing at the Back, Ass Wipe Junkies and Rejected Monsters. Up first was one…

Photo Gallery: SkaterCon 5

SkaterCon 5 marks the last live music I was able to capture before we all went into self-quarantine mode. For that, I am happy because it stands one of my favorite events in Arizona. It is wonderful that it was able to go off without a hitch once again this year. That is from the professional skaters to the skating competitions to the live music, it is an excellent amalgamation of things coming together for the sole goal of celebrating skating. This year brought music from McRad, 16, Boneless Ones,…

Among Friends

For the six years I’ve been heading to Punk Rock Bowling, there has been the added benefit of bands passing through Phoenix the Tuesday I’m back. This year was different with no punk show to run out to when I got home on Tuesday. However, we did have the benefit of Sniper 66 passing through one day later. On the bill were a few local favorites, Birth of Monsters, most of Ass Wipe Junkies, and TV Tragedy. The openers would be the high energy, high enthusiasm Birth of Monsters. These…

DIY Punk At the Rats Ass

The DIY scene goes hand and hand with the punk scene. Many come in the form of homes turned into venues. A couple DIY spaces are official establishments that cater to a broader range like 924 Gilman and our own local Trunk Space. One of the better ones to pop up was the Rats Ass. The venue since this show has shut down. Although fear not, it has reopened under a new name. Even under the new name, you must “ask a punk” to find the address. I arrived late…

Putting the BBQ In Punk Rock

The Fourth of July bring out your usual patriotism and fireworks. For me, and a lot in the Phoenix punk scene, it brings other fantastic traditions and get-togethers. The annual Pre-Independence Day Barbeque is one of those amazing events. This is put on by Bo, of the Industry, and his wife Marcia, of Bowcat, alongside a bunch of their punk musicians and friends. I started attending them about three years ago. I have had a blast and made new friends at every one of them. This year mine kicked off…

Blackout

Weather can have an effect on shows. You know it because those outdoor shows have “RAIN OR SHINE” printed on them, but for lightning they will stop. If you told me tonight that the show at the Nile would have a delay because of a blackout for a couple blocks, I wouldn’t have believed you. However, that was just what happened as we lost power during a rain storm. The good news was that after an hour, the power came back and the bands played on until the end. The…

Local Punks Having Fun

Sometimes things happen and plans change. Unfortunately for the show last night, our headliner had a band emergency and didn’t make it to 51 West. Hope things are better now and they can continue on the road. What did happen as result was an awesome local punk show with two bands I was catching for the first time and a surprise at the end. Up first were the Ass Wipe Junkies. They’d come recommended from a couple people, and I can see why. A mostly fast paced, punk rock set…
