Punk Rock Bowling 2021: Day 0 and 1

Turns out there are ways to make two and a half years feel like forever. Of course, the idiot in the White House spewing nonsense daily was a regular attack on our mental well being. Then in 2020, our favorite musicians touring and festivals came to a grinding for the safety of one another with Covid 19 on the spread. Those of us being morons about wearing masks and keeping quarantined had a year and a half of streams by those same artists and a few of the festivals, including…

Warehouses Were Made For Music

Going to music brings you to a variety of places. We have our house shows, the hole in the walls, the bigger venues, and the DIY shows. These DIY shows more often are houses, although they have brought me to a rental space and now to a warehouse. This warehouse gave an awesome aesthetic surrounded by stacks of computer parts and cases. It brought together a variety of musicians with Bad Times, Not Confined, Monty O’Blivion, TOSO, and the Linecutters. Opening up is the always great to see familiar face…

The 2017 Top 10 of the Arizona Locals

I’ll say it here, for all the complaints people have for 2017, and I have a couple of my own, the Arizona music scene is strong. They are killing it in this last year. It made my choices tough. Fighting the urge to make it the longest list since 2016, I have cut it down to my top 10 local Phoenix and Arizona band albums. You can see my genre of preference in it, but I’m sure you will find surprises. So without further adieu… Alex Squared “Mexican Fishing Tricks”…

True Sounds of Liberty

The month of August started with a bang. This was show that brought a legendary legacy in punk with the more exciting up and comers. There was no doubt I would be in attendance from the moment I saw show announcement. T.S.O.L. and Father Figures accompanied by the high energy guys of Reason Unknown and the Linecutters conquered Club Red this night. Opening up is easily the best punks to explode on our scene in the last two years, the Linecutters. They blend hardcore singing with the tunes of your…

The Beginning of Punk Rock Bowling 2017

Punk Rock Bowling is the annual gathering of punks, and some rude boys, for about four days of music. That is not including the occasional Thursday night club show they have started doing in the last couple years. It has grown larger each year, now in three cities including Denver and Asbury Park. Punk Rock Bowling has been my carefree, getting drunk, and moshing around to music vacation four years running now. One of the greatest treats has been seeing friends in local scene and beyond making it to this…

Double Whammy

What do you do when there is a bunch of music in one night? If you’re me, you try to find the best way to hit as much as you love and enjoy it. For tonight, probably one of the best examples of how I earned my nickname, I hit up two separate shows almost simultaneously. In this case, it was an easier example with both 51 West and Yucca Tap Room being walking distance. It was catching a great combination of some awesome folk punk, punk, and rockabilly combined.…

A Couple of Punks Solo It

This was a night catching one of my favorite touring friends, and seeing more of the great younger musicians in our punk scene. There was a good energy to the room. A lot of fantastic musicians I don’t usually see play by themselves, just usually with their appropriate bands. Three of the four didn’t even use a microphone. First up we had Dani Delarge, who comes from the super energetic band The Otos. His bandmate, Liam, I’ve watched go fearlessly into mosh pits for a few years now. Dani’s solo…

A Night with Choking Victim

That was an exciting night, and capped off with an awesome Choking Victim set. I was in line around 7:40, ten minutes after doors and Linecutters started. So I first must apologize to the Linecutters for missing tonight’s set. You guys are awesome every time I see you. Please go check out their music! I did manage to get in before Sad Kid took the stage and they had that crowd engaged from the start. The pit only grew through their set. Kyle later went into the crowd near the end…
