The Ebb and Flow of Tuesday

Blind purchases can lead to treasures and discoveries. Also, it can lead to a miserable Warped Tour 2011 with bands I just can’t stand listening to, like Gym Class Heroes and Devil Wears Prada. Of course, Less than Jake sits number two under NOFX on my all-time favorites to save that day, but I had to get to their set time with no reentry. While roaming around, and flipping off the Devil Wears Prada stage, I stumbled upon this band setting up with a standup bass. They had more facial…

Guitar Party Power, Confirmed!

Bob Log III is a musician I have somehow missed seeing. He comes from Tucson, so he is nearby and plays Phoenix often enough to catch. He was on a club show that I attended on the inside stage of the Bunkhouse, during Punk Rock Bowling. I somehow missed him then too. Not sure how I have avoided his performances, but tonight was the night to correct that wrong. The night opened with only a single opener, but with the awesome named, Shit Show Duo. This pair of hilarious guys…

Shut Up, Get Rad

Teenage Bottlerocket I discovered later than many. Regardless, when I did, I fell in love with the music. I picked up the latest at the time, “Freak Out!” and then consumed all of the music I could find going into their back catalog. They played music that gave me an old school Ramones feeling, but with modern punk blended in. The lyrics touched upon topics of love, skaters, geeky stuff, and shitty customer service jobs that I related to in a heartbeat. Enjoying everything I was listening to, of course,…

The Pleasures of the Ears

Expanding on the bands and music that you listen to is one of the greatest pleasures. It lets you see and experience bands you may not have got out to see if you stuck to your bubble. On the flipside, it means you slowly build out a large music collection that gets harder to memorize all the lyrics within. Tonight was another one of those nights, experiencing Zeke for the first time. There was only one local on this show, and that was Old Fashion Assassin. The three piece are…

Bro, Don’t Call Me Bro

There is not quite a show like a Broloaf show. I could name it that because of the presentation. The confetti, the beer bongs, and the story skits they put on through any given show. Though actually, it includes the bands that are booked with them. I find myself seeing fantastic bands, not always of the punk genre, playing on the bill with Broloaf. This is what leaves me anticipating anytime Broloaf plays, with no exception tonight. No stranger to me or this site, We Might Be Wasted kicked off…

A Captive Audience

Earlier in the week I posted the fortune “Express yourself, do something creative.” The debate of if fortune cookies should be telling us our alleged future or just give us inspiring messages can rage on. The message in question, however, is the underlying reason I love music. You have people telling you their thoughts, their desires, and sometimes their humor through their talents of creating the sound of music. It is used to give you their views on a current event in their life or just vent. It comes together…

The Night of Awesome Band Names

Two people can make up a great band. I’ve had this discussion time to time since discovering both the Two Tens and In the Whale in the past two years. While it doesn’t tend to include a bassist, these bands have an energy and garage punk sound that is enthralling. Entering the night, I was actually most excited to catch the Two Tens again. Plus this would be my first time seeing the Dollyrots. What I didn’t expect was the excellent surprise with Shovel opening up. I haven’t listened to…

The Ska Prom and a Spring Fling

Spring is a time where the temperatures in Phoenix would be summer time for the rest of the country. Growing up here I’ve become acclimated to it, making it just a great time to get outdoors. With it brings the celebrations and the prom seasons too. This Saturday night was a combination of both for me, with a Spring Fling and taking in another annual Ska Prom. I made my way to the gorgeous Cave Creek for the first time for my friend’s, Jason, Spring Fling. This was my first…

Punk Rock Straight Outta Yorkshire

What better way to usher in a weekend than with some high paced, punk rock? Coming off a week where I had a house sale to deal with on top of the normal ebb and flow, I was exhausted enough to have an unexpected nap after work. By the first song of First or Last, I already could tell I was too relaxed for a punk show. This couldn’t stand, so with a beer given to me, we started the process into matching the fast paced sounds of the night.…

T.P.F.R.

I will admit at the top that my experience and knowledge of hip hop isn’t that strong. This includes dating back to early nineties hip hop, where the extent is a little of Wu-Tang and having listened to a bunch of Beastie Boys. It was more that I couldn’t relate to it. Enter the Nerdcore genre, where these were lyrics and topics that bring out things I’m familiar with. For an example of how engrained into some of the nerdcore topics I am, my left arm includes two video game…
