Bidding Farewell

The first band interview I did was with Reason Unknown. Scott has been the only drummer I’ve known for that band since I discovered them. The unfortunate side effect of life is that it brings changes regularly. In this case, the Phoenix punk scene is losing a great dude on drums and energetic guy to find in any mosh pit. Scott is moving to Colorado, and this was the last night to enjoy him with Reason Unknown. Becoming Legends had the honor to open up this show. Unfortunately, I missed…

A Summer Birthday

This marks the third birthday show put together by a friend. It was a full punk lineup, varied from the prior two shows. This time it was celebrating Summer’s birthday and she brought out five shining examples of the Phoenix scene. How she managed to stay closer to sober the entire night is the only enigma I have. The first of the music was her boyfriend’s band, Rundown Roommates. These energy filled guys didn’t hold anything back. I’m starting to get used to seeing Freddy behind the drums regularly. He…

The Good Folk

There’s nothing like good folk and acoustic music. Tuesday night was a mix of some I’ve seen before, and some I haven’t, expanding the list of musicians I like. I discovered Ike Fonseca and Ghost in the Willow, and catching the talented Chip Hanna and Leonhardt once again. Opening up was Leonhardt, who from the sound of it was driving back that day to Phoenix. Lucky for us, we got to catch him play a set. He plays with a guitar and drum box like Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold…

There Was Cake

I know a lot of Gemini that love music. The next of the June birthday shows was for my great friend Tommie. This one was packed full of friends in bands and her boyfriend, Donnie, opening up in We Might Be Wasted. Unfortunately, I was wrapping up the last of the Punk Rock Bowling pictures and arrived late. But knowing Donnie, I’m sure it was awesome. If it included that speedo again, then my eyes were spared something too. Since I arrived late, I ended up starting the night off…

The Bierman Band

It would appear I know a lot of Gemini that love music. This time it was my friend, Josh Bierman, performing with his band for his birthday. He assembles a great amount of talent with him too. Some amazing drummers, some talented saxophonist, and Evan Berg sang some too. While nights like this are more covers, he manages to squeeze in some of his excellent originals. Though the covers his band plays show the scope and scale of his abilities to play a couple music genres. Take this one as…

Folk Punk Under the Stars

A packed house is what the Days N Daze show brought to the Trunk Space. There was a lot of excitement going into this show for multiple reasons, including Diego Galvan and Travis James releasing their split. I haven’t been in attendance at the current Trunk Space location when this packed since it opened. They hit capacity for the normal space, but would accommodate all that stuck around and came back with Days ‘n Daze in the quad. This was a crazy and exciting night of music. Unfortunately because of…

A Broadcast of Passion

“Broadcasting to the Nations” marks the six album release from Authority Zero on a label. Including prior independent releases that puts the notch up to eight. This marks nearly two decades of music from one of the few punk bands to come out of Phoenix with a following across the world. This release show brought one of my favorite punk bands, Guttermouth, to town alongside four local openers with more of a reggae and rock leaning. The first of the night’s lineup was Howard Til Midnight. These guys were the…
