Far From Half Baked

Tonight was a favorite pair of local bands. Both times I have seen Dent, it was with Twin Ponies. They are a great compliment to each other. Tonight I could boost that to say that all three bands, including Baked, were awesome together. They made for a fantastic night of music at the Rebel Lounge. Up first were the awesome guys of Dent. This was my first time seeing them without the projector of fun imagery. They didn’t need it, bringing a good rock and alternative blend to the stage.…

Big Eyes for CJ Ramone

Nostalgia holds a strong grip on a lot of humanity. When you bring in nostalgia for a band that helped usher in the punk genre, you’re going to attract a lot of people looking for that original sound. While I enjoy watching CJ Ramone play some covers of The Ramones, what I enjoy more is watching him do his original stuff. He brought along Big Eyes for the tour, plus one of my local favorites, No Gimmick, opened up the Phoenix stop. Despite No Gimmick being a band for about…

The Night of Awesome Band Names

Two people can make up a great band. I’ve had this discussion time to time since discovering both the Two Tens and In the Whale in the past two years. While it doesn’t tend to include a bassist, these bands have an energy and garage punk sound that is enthralling. Entering the night, I was actually most excited to catch the Two Tens again. Plus this would be my first time seeing the Dollyrots. What I didn’t expect was the excellent surprise with Shovel opening up. I haven’t listened to…

What is a Genre?

I have had two discussions on what real Emo music is, and both times have been at Rebel Lounge this year. They have also occurred when I was catching a band or musician in a band that is Emo appropriately. While appropriate to describe Owen, and Mike Kinsella, I will stick to my guns that our two openers are not in that category. However, all of the music tonight was great. It kicked off with Celebration Guns, who I so far have lived up to my word to see more…

Don’t Question Your Desire

There is a lot great music in Phoenix. There are a lot of great venues with music in Phoenix. Busy nights of music like tonight bring out the math, because then I’m stuck trying to figure out where to go and hope not to upset anyone I miss. This website has amplified how I want to try to get everyone covered, and I still want to watch some of my favorites. It makes for tough decisions, but no matter the choice, I always catch some amazing music. For example, tonight…

The World Is New

When a band you listened to a bunch years ago announces they are coming back, that tends to get you excited. The one and only time I saw Save Ferris was in 1999 at the No Snow X-Mas Show. Back then, when you’re sixteen year old male and the lead singer talks about it being the “Year of the Vagina” you tend to pay attention. The band would break up a couple years after that, many of the former members forming Starpool. Flash forward to three years ago, the comeback…

Good Transitions and Punk Rock

Open up your writing with an attention getter. That’s the normal writing structure expressed to us through the public education system. Make it relevant to what you’re going to write about in the next couple paragraphs. Hit on the topics you are going to discuss in this paragraph. This is usually the hardest part to jump start. Now that I got that out of the way, the show last night was another great mix of talents gracing the stage over at the Rebel Lounge. Up first was the Emo band,…

Four For the Price of Two

Sometimes all you need is two bands on the bill that you want to see. In most of my show going experience, you can tend to bank on a good line up if you like two bands on the bill. I, however, have never gone to a show completely blind, as in not listening to a recorded song of a band or word of mouth. While that sounds like a fun experience for a future write up, tonight’s package of all four bands was fantastic. It opened up with the…

The New Class of Punks

Tonight was a night that I got to check in on how some of the younger music talent is killing it in the local scene. I could put each one of the bands into a different punk rock genre giving a good mix of sounds. They had a solid turnout of the under twenty ones moshing and moving around most of the night. These kids have passion and energy for music, and I love it. Right off the bat, I was catching Sunlaand who I had unfortunately missed the night…

A Little Bit Rockabilly, A Little Bit More

I went in thinking I was catching a Rockabilly show, and I left realizing there was a broader range of music in the Rebel Lounge. The one known quantity of the night of for me entering was Manual Sex Drive, and I simply presumed I was choosing a Rockabilly night for my Saturday. While two were Rockabilly, Whiskey Six gave me a much bigger mix over their hour and a half set. Off the bat was a great band, Roadkill Wranglers, on only their second show. These guys were full…
