No Noise Complaints Here

This was a Sunday night I was looking forward to for a bit. It had been about four years since I last caught Big D and the Kids Table. It was a fantastic time hanging with them at the Warped Tour bowling event. In addition to catching their set the next day, I ran into members of the band, like Ben and Derek, around Warped Tour throughout consistently. The interactions just cemented how great these guys and the Big D are. After that I was bugging their drummer Derek every…

A Ska Mixer

Skacore is a term not found in the Phoenix scene. I first caught the genre outside of this city, when I went on a short tour in 2014 with the local band Nomada. They opened up for the River Ratts in a venue in Riverside. This was one of the craziest pits I’ve partaken in. Your instinct is to skank during the ska parts, but then the hardcore sections of the songs hit and you have yourself a mosh pit. Our headliners this night harken from that genre, sandwiched in…

Punk Rock Bowling: Day 2

The first full day of Punk Rock Bowling is Saturday. You have your pool party shows, the main stage, and the club shows. You can find yourself going about fifteen hours a day on these days. For me, this was the settling in day. I ended up out there about three, when Plague Vendor started. With the Punk Rock Bowling write ups, I’m going to probably do more blurbs than my usual writing format. There is a lot of stuff to cover, and of course, some great pictures to check…

Skankin’ is Back!

Ska revival might actually be going on. As this year trudges on, it certainly feels like the genre is starting to flourish again. From both newcomers and the established greats, I know there have been more ska shows that I’ve attended this year. As my second love, only to Punk, in music, I am enjoying this extraordinarily. Tonight was the return of Viernes 13 to the Yucca Tap Room accompanied by a solid mix of ska and punk. Opening up was the one not skirting the border of the two…

Ska Punk Is Dead

Well, no, it’s not dead. However, our local radio icon of the Ska Punk persuasion, Craven Moorehead, put together the first of possibly many nights under the name of “Ska Punk is Dead.” It is where fans of the genres can enjoy some punk rock and ska, have some beers, and meet other fans of the genre. There was some dancing too. The night is made up of a custom mix of songs chosen by our Go Punk Yourself DJ, and joined by two musicians from the local scene putting…

Skanky Bones

A night of ska, that’s what my Friday night was. I arrived to hear that a band dropped off, and it would be longer sets for two of our local ska scene offerings. I’ve been going back and forth on this, but I’m starting to believe we have a growing and blossoming ska scene in Phoenix again. The offerings are of a great quality too. Tonight two of our best, Mr. Incommunicado and the 2 Tone Lizard Kings were what I got to take in. First up is one of…

I Still Love You

If punk is my number one love in music, then Ska is a close number two. Punk was my gateway to it, discovering it when Craven Moorehead would play the Ska Punk Show song mix weekly on the FM airwaves. Started with Less than Jake and wondering what these horns are doing in there making it a little more danceable. I went down that rabbit hole and years later find me in love with the genre. That includes the Slackers being one of my top loves within it. The lineup…

What’s R and R When There’s Music Nearby?

Living closer to one of my favorite venues to visit is a luxury. Although when you go to it after your first day of moving things, may not always be the best for your energy. Regardless, I was going to take in some music after being deprived of it while I was busy packing most of the prior week. I mean, it was a quick trip from the new place. It entailed hearing three genres of music in one night too, with the Phenomenauts being a mix of a couple…

The Zero Crew

Last month I got invited to not only watch Authority Zero from backstage, but also got a photo pass for some great shots you can find in my full write up of the show here. The other amazing part of it was the guys in Authority Zero were kind enough to sit down to answer some questions for me. I got to find out how the guys met to talking about the upcoming album. They are adamantly excited about it, plus make me super envious of not visiting Japan yet.…

The Ska Prom and a Spring Fling

Spring is a time where the temperatures in Phoenix would be summer time for the rest of the country. Growing up here I’ve become acclimated to it, making it just a great time to get outdoors. With it brings the celebrations and the prom seasons too. This Saturday night was a combination of both for me, with a Spring Fling and taking in another annual Ska Prom. I made my way to the gorgeous Cave Creek for the first time for my friend’s, Jason, Spring Fling. This was my first…
