Among Friends

For the six years I’ve been heading to Punk Rock Bowling, there has been the added benefit of bands passing through Phoenix the Tuesday I’m back. This year was different with no punk show to run out to when I got home on Tuesday. However, we did have the benefit of Sniper 66 passing through one day later. On the bill were a few local favorites, Birth of Monsters, most of Ass Wipe Junkies, and TV Tragedy. The openers would be the high energy, high enthusiasm Birth of Monsters. These…

Enthusiasm from Abroad

Perspective is a point of view. With a camera, the lens or lenses you use have the possibility to give you a change on your perspective. For this night, I challenged myself to only use the 85mm lens. When shooting pictures in a festival, like the Bash recently, it is a perfect way to get those closer shots on the big stage. In a smaller venue, such as the Rebel Lounge, it forces me to tackle my shots and angles in different ways and positions. Skinny Lister back in town…

One Hell of a Bash

The amount of music festivals popping up over the past couple years has grown exponentially. A few stationary ones continue to grow, such as The Fest and Punk Rock Bowling. Meanwhile, the format of craft brew tasting mixed with music from a few of your favorite bands has begun to be the predominant model for the newer ones. This year in the stead of the annual Sabroso festival, Arizona and Phoenix residents were treated to the first ever Bash Festival headlined by Rancid. Joining them for this stop was the…

Mobility and Energy

Mobility and movement will grab the attention of those seeing it from the corner of their eyes. It is a way to release and use energy. For musicians, a lot of it is energy they feed off from performing music and the audience members. It would be the theme of a most of these musicians on this night from Pointbreak to Death by Stereo. The lineup was packed, with Life and Limb, Elvis Cortez, the Venomous Pinks, and Toxic Energy four more bands playing this Friday night at the Yucca…

Artist Spotlight: Broloaf

In this artist spotlight, it is one that occasionally brings their own spotlight since I found them, Broloaf. They are a band put together by random chance for a contest. Lucky for us, they decided after the competition to keep these members together to continue spreading the fun. Broloaf is a band with East Coast Hardcore influence and WWE flair. They write songs mocking the bro culture to the style of that genre. Well performed, as the music experience and talent of the band members shines at any given performance.…

Sweet Discoveries

Despite what a few people might think, there are bands out there I have yet to discover. For one, there are bands always popping up while others end for one reason or another. I suppose you would refer to it as the ebb and flow of the music scene. In the case of this night at the Lunchbox, I returned to catch a band with no social media presence and one with that I had seen before. With them I found two local bands I had never seen. The musicians…

Photo Gallery: The Revenge

There are a few gems in the Phoenix punk scene that don’t play too often. One of them being The Revenge. Fronted by Dennis Welch, a personality in his own right, and joined by matching personalities behind him makes for one explosively fun set of punk rock. Wit is thrown, beer is thrown, and all out blast is had. Snuck into this gallery is two shots that turned out of the excellent We Were Stereo too.

Photo Gallery: Phoenix SkaterCon 4

It was my second year, and the fourth of the every growing Phoenix SkaterCon. You could see the fine tuning in the layout at the Paradise Valley Skate Park. The event is turning into an entire day as it extended to Kool Keith and an After Party of music at the Yucca Tap Room. I repeat my sentiments from last year, this is one of my favorite Phoenix events to attend. With that, I brought my camera out to the main afternoon to capture killer music and moments. Unfortunately, due…

For the Love of the Dogs

Pets are a member of the family. They are taken in and loved like any one of our children, and sometimes are the only children we have. However, there are situations where this is not the case. People who think they have time for taking care of one until the realization they don’t and, in some cases, worse mistreatment lands many of our favorite canine’s in animal shelters. That is where AZ K9 charity comes in, to educate and support adoption of shelter dogs that need a home. In its…

Artist Spotlight: Masked Intruder

Masked Intruder is a band that first appeared on my radar as part of the Fat Wreck tour in 2013. On stage each member adorns a color coordinated ski mask and instrument. All the while, they sing songs about love and crime in a Ramones inspired pop punk. Personality radiates from the stage as they are constantly telling jokes and stories about their criminal escapades. This personality extends to Officer Bradford. He starts off serious looking like their parole officer, but then works to beat on the occasional intruder and…
