We Came To Party

Not every show can be described as partying. The party aspect is dictated more by the personalities and the music. This early week show leans heavily on the party with a few dozen new acquaintances and friends’ aspect. From that alone, there is a great enticement to attend a Piñata Protest show. The lineup was the same as the last time they performed at Yucca, and continue to be great choices to be part of this party. First band and change of the night were Whiskey and the Barrels opening…

A Little Bit Rock ‘n Roll, A Little Bit Horror

It isn’t often I see the same out of town band twice within a month. When they leave a great first impression though, of course, you will find me back. Redneck Nosferatu were rolling through town once more, this time at the Yucca Tap Room. They were joined by Buried in Red, Creepsville 666, and the great punk icon, Chip Hanna. Opening up were the fantastic three piece, Buried in Red. This night being my first to capture them closer with a camera, I noticed more about them. Aaron is…

Skankin’ is Back!

Ska revival might actually be going on. As this year trudges on, it certainly feels like the genre is starting to flourish again. From both newcomers and the established greats, I know there have been more ska shows that I’ve attended this year. As my second love, only to Punk, in music, I am enjoying this extraordinarily. Tonight was the return of Viernes 13 to the Yucca Tap Room accompanied by a solid mix of ska and punk. Opening up was the one not skirting the border of the two…

Ska Punk Is Dead

Well, no, it’s not dead. However, our local radio icon of the Ska Punk persuasion, Craven Moorehead, put together the first of possibly many nights under the name of “Ska Punk is Dead.” It is where fans of the genres can enjoy some punk rock and ska, have some beers, and meet other fans of the genre. There was some dancing too. The night is made up of a custom mix of songs chosen by our Go Punk Yourself DJ, and joined by two musicians from the local scene putting…

Far From Half Baked

Tonight was a favorite pair of local bands. Both times I have seen Dent, it was with Twin Ponies. They are a great compliment to each other. Tonight I could boost that to say that all three bands, including Baked, were awesome together. They made for a fantastic night of music at the Rebel Lounge. Up first were the awesome guys of Dent. This was my first time seeing them without the projector of fun imagery. They didn’t need it, bringing a good rock and alternative blend to the stage.…

Music on a Monday

Tonight was a night to go see a friend play. With that meant it was additionally one of those nights going in mostly blind to the rest of the lineup. Of course, going in blind to the two other bands turned out to reward. Both the Roosevelts and Dirty Sunset were excellent, plus another great time catching the Banter tonight. Dirty Sunset opened up with a fantastic, full of energy folk sound from right here in Phoenix. They are full of guys who like to move around as they play.…

It Isn’t All Painting and Fences

Last night was one of those where I could have been in six places at once. I put catching the EP release show for Painting Fences atop my list. With it came some of the best stage lighting I’ve seen at Pho Cao and two bands new to me. It included a couple extra guests during the Painting Fences set too. It was a blast to be at. If seeing Zero Degrees North for my third Saturday in a row does not show how high in regard I hold them,…

Skanky Bones

A night of ska, that’s what my Friday night was. I arrived to hear that a band dropped off, and it would be longer sets for two of our local ska scene offerings. I’ve been going back and forth on this, but I’m starting to believe we have a growing and blossoming ska scene in Phoenix again. The offerings are of a great quality too. Tonight two of our best, Mr. Incommunicado and the 2 Tone Lizard Kings were what I got to take in. First up is one of…
