A Little Bit Rockabilly, A Little Bit More

I went in thinking I was catching a Rockabilly show, and I left realizing there was a broader range of music in the Rebel Lounge. The one known quantity of the night of for me entering was Manual Sex Drive, and I simply presumed I was choosing a Rockabilly night for my Saturday. While two were Rockabilly, Whiskey Six gave me a much bigger mix over their hour and a half set. Off the bat was a great band, Roadkill Wranglers, on only their second show. These guys were full…

AWS Can Be More Than One Band

The abbreviation of AWS can stand for more than A Wilhelm Scream. That didn’t cross my mind until Adrian, Assuming We Survive’s lead singer, pointed out they have a way to get into their next music video by using the hashtag “#aws” with a selfie with any of the band in it. That turned into a fun conversation after the show with Adrian about both bands, telling me how it is a frequent conversation with A Wilhelm Scream’s online hashtags and they are good friends. This is just one example…

A Couple of Punks Solo It

This was a night catching one of my favorite touring friends, and seeing more of the great younger musicians in our punk scene. There was a good energy to the room. A lot of fantastic musicians I don’t usually see play by themselves, just usually with their appropriate bands. Three of the four didn’t even use a microphone. First up we had Dani Delarge, who comes from the super energetic band The Otos. His bandmate, Liam, I’ve watched go fearlessly into mosh pits for a few years now. Dani’s solo…

It Gets Worse, But Not This Night!

Tonight was one of those nights where the magic of social media helps you discover a band somewhere else in the country, and when they finally come to your home city you make sure to go see them play. It Gets Worse is that band for me on this Tuesday night. They originally followed me over a year ago on Instagram, and I looked into who they were and some of their music to end up following back. The night started locally with the guys in Mr. Incommunicado. The first…

Spoken Word With a Punk Legend

When the name Henry Rollins is brought up, most people will immediately think of Black Flag. While the legendary punk group is among his long history of talents and bands, he has branched out into the fields of writing, speaking, and acting. Some of my favorite Henry Rollins acting roles include lending his voice to comic animated roles in Batman and Green Lantern, but in addition starring in the film “He Never Dies.” He has retired from music, but he tours the world with his spoken word. Henry Rollins spoken…

Young Punks On the Rise

Here is a show making amends for not seeing Doll Skin sooner, despite all the good rumblings I’ve heard all year about this group of young punks. Following their Instagram you will find some awesome pictures with some big musicians, and, of course, the Fat Mike one drew my attention. They’ve been out touring and making a name for themselves thanks to another famous name, David Ellefson of Megadeth, managing them. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you might start questioning why not at this point too. The show…

Expanding On Rockabilly With Tim Polecat

It is a known fact that I love my Punk and Ska at the front most, but I am a lover of many music genres from the Nerdcore to the Folk. My knowledgebase of other genres are where I falter more than that of the first two mentioned above. This is a night that I got to expand on my Rockabilly knowledge, while seeing one of the bigger legends of the genre in Tim Polecat from, well, the Polecats! This night started off with a brand new band by their…

Even Mondays Bring Great Music

The band that I last saw between a top five favorite artist of mine, Frank Turner, and the super talented, Beans on Toast, was the headliner tonight. Skinny Lister who toured with Frank was the ones traveling the U.S. atop the tour. They impressed last time in that amazing sandwich of musicians at the Press Room, and they upped the ante when playing the role of headliner tonight. Right off the bat the show started off with a great duo of brothers from Wisconsin called Trapper Schoepp. These guys are…

A Grand Ol’ Punk Show

This was a freaking fun night of music. The show was loaded to the brim with seven bands, four of our locals and three touring bands. We even saw No Gimmick spare no expense for the endeavor with a handmade banner. With that large line up came an early start to the show at 6:45. The night led off with Krovak doing their more traditional set since Halloween. Leigh’s R2-D2 did make it out again onto one of the amps for the set. We even got reading material from Leigh…

Because Fuck Cancer

This was a night for Hunter Keener, and helping those like him, who have to deal with fighting Leukemia at a young age. The show organized by Ross to celebrate Hunter having his last treatment, and raise money for other families who deal with this at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This was a night of friends and family coming together for the same amazing cause, and to say “Fuck Cancer.” Heck, I even brought the PBR shaker that gave me my first nickname of “Homemade Shaker Joe” for this special…
