Even Mondays Bring Great Music

The band that I last saw between a top five favorite artist of mine, Frank Turner, and the super talented, Beans on Toast, was the headliner tonight. Skinny Lister who toured with Frank was the ones traveling the U.S. atop the tour. They impressed last time in that amazing sandwich of musicians at the Press Room, and they upped the ante when playing the role of headliner tonight. Right off the bat the show started off with a great duo of brothers from Wisconsin called Trapper Schoepp. These guys are…

A Grand Ol’ Punk Show

This was a freaking fun night of music. The show was loaded to the brim with seven bands, four of our locals and three touring bands. We even saw No Gimmick spare no expense for the endeavor with a handmade banner. With that large line up came an early start to the show at 6:45. The night led off with Krovak doing their more traditional set since Halloween. Leigh’s R2-D2 did make it out again onto one of the amps for the set. We even got reading material from Leigh…

Because Fuck Cancer

This was a night for Hunter Keener, and helping those like him, who have to deal with fighting Leukemia at a young age. The show organized by Ross to celebrate Hunter having his last treatment, and raise money for other families who deal with this at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This was a night of friends and family coming together for the same amazing cause, and to say “Fuck Cancer.” Heck, I even brought the PBR shaker that gave me my first nickname of “Homemade Shaker Joe” for this special…

This Side of Buckeye

This night was a fulfillment of seeing one of the big local Phoenix bands when I was just finding music, listening to The Edge 106.3 in my car with my recently printed driver’s license. The Phunk Junkeez are self-described “alterna-rock rap hybrid.” I would put them in the alternative styles of the Rage Against the Machines and Limp Bizkits that were big or growing bigger in the mid-90’s. Also throw out a big thank you to JT Trick, who got me in and back stage for this show! We got…

The Monday Night Killer Trio

This show has been on my most anticipated list since I first heard Aimee Interrupter announce it at Warped Tour. How could a line up with both Bad Cop/Bad Cop and the Interrupters ever disappoint? It cannot, did not, and got even better with Bowcat added on top.   If you’re wondering what Bowcat is, probably best to look up the band on its Bandcamp or Facebook page. A Google search may return other not friendly to a work environment results. This band since I started seeing them has just…

Fishbone With a Little Funk and Soul

Here is a night I make the trek to the old Mason Jar, now known as the Rebel Lounge, to catch one of the best bands I’ve seen play outside of festival shows. When Fishbone is given their own show and set, they play one of the most fantastic sets I have seen any band play every time. If you’re a fan of any ska or reggae, you owe it to yourself to catch one of their shows.     This night opened with the pleasant surprise of a local…

Eken is Dead’s Rogue Night

If there’s a hard punk band from L.A. that I don’t miss when they visit, that is the guys in Eken is Dead. I descended onto the Rogue Bar the first time in a couple months for this one, near the Southern border of Scottsdale. The other awesome thing about Eken is Dead shows in Phoenix is that it brings out a lot of friends so a great setting to catch music.   My reward for getting there in time for the opening band was I was greeted with the…

The Gypsy Punks

This was a fantastic night of music! Well, other than it was off to a slow start. I don’t mind DJ’s, and they can be really engaging. However, opening up a show that many are out for a brand of rock and punk with forty minutes of a DJ can be a killer. It became a time of more continued socialization on my part. I glanced around the Marquee Theatre to see what looked like a lot of people disinterested or bored. I feel bad saying something bad about DJ…

In The Whale on this Punk Sunday

This night started after the Arizona Cardinals game, getting to Yucca early to chomp down their wings as a dinner and chat football with Eric and Nate of In the Whale. This was in addition to a discussion of which team do we dislike more on Sunday Night Football, the Seahawks or the Patriots. We didn’t come to any agreement, mine being a division rival with impartial feelings toward the Pats and theirs being an AFC rival of their Broncos. Then we drifted onto other topics, and had a blast…

Just an Okilly Dokilly Kind of Night

Riding little sleep from Thursday night didn’t keep me from going out another night for music. However, a lot of great music out there on the same night came keep me from things I want to catch that are awesome too. First thing, I want to give a shout out to the Darling Sounds for the awesome new album release! I wasn’t able to make it, but I did pick up the album digitally. I highly recommend others go check out their new album! For the release show I did…
