Putting the BBQ In Punk Rock

The Fourth of July bring out your usual patriotism and fireworks. For me, and a lot in the Phoenix punk scene, it brings other fantastic traditions and get-togethers. The annual Pre-Independence Day Barbeque is one of those amazing events. This is put on by Bo, of the Industry, and his wife Marcia, of Bowcat, alongside a bunch of their punk musicians and friends. I started attending them about three years ago. I have had a blast and made new friends at every one of them. This year mine kicked off…

We Came To Party

Not every show can be described as partying. The party aspect is dictated more by the personalities and the music. This early week show leans heavily on the party with a few dozen new acquaintances and friends’ aspect. From that alone, there is a great enticement to attend a Piñata Protest show. Celebrating St. Patty on the Ides of March

It is never too early to start drinking. That seems a good mantra to apply to any day, but, in addition, to starting to celebrate St. Patty’s Day. They Are Not Protesters of Piñata

Punk rock is a mentality that can be infused into anything. The guys in Piñata Protest are a group that demonstrates this.  This band is a high energy infusion of Latin influences, like cumbia, into punk rock. Hopefully if there are people unaware of how awesome they are or that they are punk, this piece of writing about the show at Yucca will bring some people to go check them out next time they are in town. The show itself was an assortment of punk, kicking off with Andy Warpig’s…

A Wedding Punk-iversary

Twenty Five years is a long time, and an amazing achievement. Tonight’s show was a celebration of two good friends, Barry and Isabel, celebrating twenty five years married. I did forget to ask what has made it work well for so long, but I have to imagine it is that punk rock spirit in it. Not only are they one of the most punk couples I know going to shows, they had a punk rock show with cake to celebrate those twenty five years instead of just a simple house…
